A tooth extraction is when a dentist removes a tooth from your mouth. At The Center for Aesthetic and Implant Dentistry, Dr. Taylor Ruby and Dr. Bryan Harris focus on making this visit calm, clear, and as comfortable as possible. If you need an extraction, our goal is to relieve pain, protect your health, and help you plan what comes next for your smile.

Tooth Extraction Louisville

What Is Tooth Extraction?

Tooth extraction is a dental procedure that removes a tooth that cannot be saved, or a tooth that is causing problems for nearby teeth and gums. Some extractions are simple, like removing a loose or damaged tooth that is easy to see. Other extractions are more involved, like a tooth that is broken below the gumline or a tooth that is hard to reach.

Before recommending extraction, Dr. Ruby will look at your tooth, your gums, and your dental X-rays. If there is a safe way to keep the tooth (like a filling, crown, root canal, or gum treatment), he will discuss those options with you. If extraction is the best choice, we will explain the steps and help you feel prepared.

When Is Tooth Extraction Necessary?

Extractions are sometimes needed to stop pain, remove infection, and prevent bigger problems. A tooth may need to come out when it is too damaged to repair or when keeping it could harm your overall oral health.

Common reasons for tooth extraction include:

  • Severe tooth decay that reaches deep into the tooth
  • Infection or an abscess that may not improve with other treatment
  • A cracked or broken tooth that cannot be restored
  • Advanced gum disease that has loosened the tooth
  • Crowding issues where a tooth blocks proper alignment
  • A problematic wisdom tooth (such as pain, swelling, or repeated infection)

Sometimes, the tooth may not hurt much at first. You may notice swelling, a bad taste, pressure, or pain when chewing. If you think something is wrong, it is best to schedule a visit early. Treating the problem sooner can help prevent pain and protect nearby teeth.

What to Expect During and After the Procedure

Before the extraction

Your visit starts with an exam and X-rays. Dr. Ruby will review your medical history and medications. This helps us plan safely, especially if you have diabetes, heart conditions, or take blood thinners. You will also have time to ask questions so you know what will happen next.

During the extraction

We numb the area with local anesthetic so you should not feel sharp pain. You may feel pressure as the tooth is gently loosened and removed. If the tooth is difficult to remove, it may need to be taken out in small sections. Our team will explain what we are doing in simple steps and check on you throughout the procedure.

After the extraction

Right after the tooth is removed, we place gauze to help a blood clot form. This clot is important because it protects the area as it heals. You will get clear home-care instructions. Most people have some soreness and swelling for a few days. This is normal.

Many patients feel best when they follow these basics:

  • Bite gently on gauze as directed, and avoid spitting or using straws at first
  • Use ice packs on and off during the first day to help with swelling
  • Eat soft foods and chew away from the area
  • Keep your mouth clean, but be gentle around the extraction site
  • Take any recommended medicine exactly as directed

Healing time depends on the tooth and your health. Some sites feel much better in a few days, while the bone and gums can take longer to fully heal. If you have increasing pain after a few days, or you notice a bad smell or taste, call our office. We want to help right away.

After an extraction, you may also want to talk about replacing the missing tooth. Leaving a space can allow teeth to shift over time. Dr. Harris, as a prosthodontist, can help plan the best long-term option for your bite and smile, including crowns, bridges, dentures, or dental implants when appropriate.

Benefits of Tooth Extraction

Removing a problem tooth can be a big relief. While it is normal to feel nervous, many patients say they are glad they did it once the pain is gone and the area starts to heal.

Benefits of tooth extraction may include:

  • Relief from tooth pain and pressure, removal of infected tissue, and a lower risk of the infection spreading to other teeth or areas of the body.
  • Extraction can also protect nearby teeth and gums from ongoing damage. In some cases, removing a tooth helps create space for a healthier bite or makes room for future treatment.
  • Most importantly, it can be the first step toward rebuilding your smile with a strong, natural-looking replacement.
